Sherri - Owner | ||
|
Sherri began her lifelong commitment to loving and working with dogs as a child. She has consistently owned, worked with and volunteered on behalf of dogs throughout every phase of her life. Determining that her career path would incorporate this passion for canines, she has a lifetime of education and experience in many dog related areas. Tired of old school methods for training, Sherri decided to research other methods and discovered an organization named Dealing with Dogs. The founder, Judy, showed her the value of positive reinforcement training, a new dog friendly approach pioneered by Dr. Ian Dunbar. Sherri used her expertise along with Dr. Dunbar’s method to develop her own unique approach. Sherri currently focuses on behaviour. Her immediate goals are: - Promoting owner awareness about socialization and problem prevention. - Increasing owner/dog success rates for difficult behaviour issues or basic obedience by adding creative options, extra services, fun, and lots of support. - Creating personalized options for owners and their dogs to work through difficult, time consuming behaviour issues, unruly puppy problems, and everything in between. |
Sherri hopes to see more preventative work with pups and less rehabilitation work with older dogs in the very near future. She will use her relentless enthusiasm for “new and improved ways” to bring vets, trainers, and dog lovers on board in adding this necessary piece to standard dog care. Staying current in this rapidly advancing field is crucial and continued education remains a top priority. Sherri’s educational background is in Animal Sciences, with a BSc. from the University of Guelph. She has completed dozens of animal behaviour courses, lectures and conferences over the years and continues to do so. After completing her apprenticeship program for dog training, Sherri taught obedience classes and gave private lessons. Intrigued by animal behaviour and a love of learning, Sherri has expanded her education again to become a dog behaviour consultant. She has also taught early education/socialization classes at Vet Clinics and has written her own pre-school program. As a former breeder of Labrador retrievers, Sherri was an active member of both the L.O.C. (Labrador Owners Club) and the C.K.C. (Canadian Kennel Club). She and her dogs were involved in both Obedience and Confirmation. Sherri served on the Board of Directors of the first rescue program in Ontario for Labrador Retrievers, L.R.R.O., as well as fostering, training and re-homing many of the first labs brought into the program. She is fully trained as a groomer, places high value on remaining active in volunteer work, is a member of the Canadian Association of Professional Pet Dog Trainers, the Association of Pet Dog Trainers and is certified in Animal First Aid. |
